Video Of The Week: Russia

While we might have it bad around here in terms of driving standards, there are countries out there which have it worse. This intersection in Russia does not have traffic signals, and drivers are supposed to cross the junction based on courtesy alone. The results, of course, are not pretty.

Bugatti owners offended by us

Bugatti owners offended by us

I received the following email today from someone (whose name I shall withhold):

Dear Sir/Maam

Let me first say that I am very impressed at your site. Its accurate details have been of great benefit to me when purchasing any automobile in the U.A.E.. Unfortunately I have been offended by some of the remarks posted as they do not siute my clients or the people I work for. The cons on the Buggati Veyron 16.4 that “Priced for rich MORONS, practicality, needs oil well to run”, is a bit too hostile even unprofessional as I know two people who own the legendary vehicle.

Civic drive ends in unrelated headache

Civic drive ends in unrelated headache

So we drove our rental 2007 Honda Civic for eight straight days and returned it. Later I find out there is a speeding fine on it. Except that I did not step out of the house at the time of the fine, let alone be anywhere near the location listed for the speed camera. I’ll have to waste a morning clearing up this nonsense now. This is not the first time that the wrong fines have ended on my lap. Thank you, Dubai Police.

Update: Wasted a morning. As expected, got the runaround. Will have to waste a second morning to see if anything is solved.

Back in the early 1980s, before America became a country that tries too hard to be politically correct, yet managed to turn everything into a political disaster, there existed a gaming console known as the Atari 2600. In the days before Nintendo and Sega, the Atari ruled and the best game ever at that time was Pole Position, which can be called the first proper driving game ever. I first played it in the early 90s as a kid on my fake Atari, but this original ad is from the early 80s, when the game was new and people weren’t offended so easily.

The Aussies call them SMART cars, which stands for Special Mobile Anti- Road Toll, and they’re meant to form a highly visible presence that promotes safe driving. Of course, the Commodore SS is sold in the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina SS.

So we got a new Honda Civic finally

So we got a new Honda Civic finally

For almost a year, we begged for a test drive of the 2006 Civic from local Honda reps. Heck, these cars were never even in stock at local dealerships. So we never drove one, even though we got tons of requests for it to be reviewed. Well, my own car just got temporarily incapacitated, so I figured I’ll go rent out a Civic for a week.

Video Of The Week: Saudi

You might’ve come across “Arab drifting” videos before. Rowdy youth in Saudi Arabia started this trend, spinning their Toyotas in multiple 360s on public streets full of traffic and bystanders. The trick is simply to do 180 kph in a bouncy car and start yanking the steering wheel left and right with a dab of the handbrake, while loading down your car with four of your dumbest buddies to keep the car from flipping over. You have to wonder how they practice this nonsense. And what happens when things go wrong.
