We got the new Ford Edge for a test drive, although it took us a while to get our heads around the fact that Ford let us have it for only a day. We didn’t believe it until we saw the final paperwork. Anyway, while it is no Rolls Royce, it is a comfortable crossover that seats five, rides like a Camry and can fit a big TV in the back.

In 1998, Japanese racing driver Tetsuya Ota was involved in a chain reaction collision during a GT championship race. Ota was trapped in his Ferrari for more than 50 seconds while exposed to 800-degree temperatures. The safety crew was slow to respond as fellow drivers frantically extinguished the flames. The result ended with serious burns to Ota and a lawsuit against track promoters and sponsors.

I’ve never been a fan of vehicles that look like a 4WD, but do not provide all the capabilities of a 4WD. The Toyota RAV-4 is one such vehicle, with car-like underpinnings and all-wheel-drive. But as I drove it back-to-back with a full-blooded truck-based 4WD, namely the Chevy Tahoe Z71, the strengths of the crossover conundrum became all too obvious.
