The all-new 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTI is on display at the 2013 Qatar Motor Show, if only as a “concept” that was first shown at other auto shows a few months ago.
It’s funny that we’ve been testing a string of VWs for the past two months, but delayed driving till now the one VW that everyone’s been requesting us to test. This here is the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
Normally we don’t put up reviews from other sources, but we came across this ancient Top Gear video from 1997 that tests a Toyota Corolla hatchback from that era. They even pit it against a Volkswagen Golf GTI, and the results are satisfying. Interesting to note how many awards that car apparently won back then. We also own a 1997 Corolla that we bought new, but we had no idea how class-leading it really was at the time. I was just a high-school kid with no internet back then.
For a company hell-bent on protecting its brand image, even going as far as blocking us from reviewing their cars, it is ironic that they create their own problems. Volkswagen of America has announced a “voluntary” recall involving 13,500 vehicles equipped with its notorious DSG automanual transmission. Models affected by the recall include the Golf GTI, the Eos and the Mexican-built Jetta, built between September 2008 and August 2009.
