The 2012 edition of the Sharjah Auto Show is expectedly as cosy as it’s always been, but it held a few interesting surprises this year. Held alongside the Middle East Motor Awards, almost all the top nominated cars were displayed together in one mega-display of great cars, including the McLaren MP4-12C, the Toyota 86 and the Porsche 911. Elsewhere, Mitsubishi launched two new unexpected models, the Lancer Fortis and the Mirage. Nissan displayed their entire range, including the new Altima, redesigned Urvan and the current GT-R, with Infiniti taking another section. Volkswagen brought out the new Polo Sedan as well as a lifted Amarok pickup.

The local dealer for Mitsubishi in the UAE pulled a couple of surprise launches at the 2012 Sharjah Auto Show this week, unveiling the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis.

The 2010 Sharjah Auto Show in October also played host to the first Middle East Motor Tuning Show, which in turn hosted the 2010 Custom Design Cup. Around the Middle East, everyone with a penchant for drawing cars were invited to submit their ideas on how to modify a 2010 Ford Mustang GT, visual exterior and interior only. Ten judges, including me, were asked to rate the designs based on various criteria and whether they were feasible. The 2010 Sharjah Auto Show is running from the 14th till the 18th of October, and this year was a better outing, with new model displays such as the BMW 316i, the Infiniti M, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Sterling Moss Edition, the Cadillac CTS Coupe, the Mitsubishi ASX, the Nissan Qashqai and the Audi R8 Spyder. Also special were a tuner car section, a classic car section, a remote control car section, a drifting show and an off-road demo. And the Middle East Motor Awards, the first such event to span the region, was concluded with an awards ceremony for the judges as well as the winners.

BMW used the 2010 Sharjah Auto Show to launch the 2011 BMW 316iA in the UAE. The 316iA is a new base model for the wide-ranging 3-Series line-up, to offer “poorer” buyers a chance to buy a proper BMW sedan at an affordable price instead of being forced to squeeze into a 1-Series hatchback.

German manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and Porsche have each taken home three awards at the first Middle East Motor Awards (MEMA) today. The awards were based on points issued by 13 judges for each nominated model. I was one of the judges.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah will open the 10th International Automobile Show (IAS) today (14 October 2010) at Expo Centre Sharjah, which offers car enthusiasts and families alike five days of car showcases, demonstrations and even an off-road course for visitors to tackle. أكدت الشركة العربية للسيارات، وهي الموزع الحصري لسيارات نيسان وإنفينيتي ورينو في دبي والإمارات الشمالية، دعمها القوي لـ “المعرض الدولي العاشر للسيارات” في إمارة الشارقة، الذي يُقام في “مركز إكسبو الشارقة” ويستمر من 14 ولغاية 18 أكتوبر. وستكون منصة العربية للسيارات الأكبر في المعرض، إذ ستمتد على مساحة 1،500 متر مربع وتتضمن مجموعة من 15 طراز نيسان وثمانية طرازات فاخرة من إنفينيتي. كما سيستطيع الزوار اختبار مجموعة من سيارات نيسان بأنفسهم على حلبة اختبارات وعرة مخصصة لهذا الغرض.

Arabian Automobiles Company, the exclusive dealer of Nissan, Infiniti and Renault in Dubai and the Northern Emirates is confirming its strong support of the 10th International Automobile Show in Sharjah running from October 14th – 18th. Spread over 1500 square metres and featuring a line-up of 15 models from Nissan and 8 models from luxury brand Infiniti, the Arabian Automobiles stand will be the largest at the show which is being held at Expo Centre Sharjah. Visitors will also be able to test a cross-section of Nissan products on the dedicated off road test track.

Nissan’s UAE dealer will be launching the all-new 2011 Infiniti M37 and M56 models at a press event in Dubai on October 10, and will showcase the car to the public in their stand at the 2010 Sharjah Auto Show, starting October 14 this week. A wider Middle East press launch was already held in Lebanon, from what we heard.
