When we heard that Porsche Middle East had bumped up their test-drive period to a little more than a day now, we were more than a little pleased. Previously, Porsche used to hand over test vehicles for just six hours at a time so as to avoid naive journalists, drunk or otherwise, from trashing their cars. Porsche has released early “spy shots” of their next-generation 911 sports car. Dubbed the 991-generation, it looks as you’d expect a 911 to look, which is to say, indistinguishable from older versions, but Porsche is making drastic changes beyond the styling.

Porsche announced the launch of its all new Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, a street legal variant of the 911 GT3 track-only race car. According to Porsche, the model, which is limited to just 600 units, shall debut boasting the biggest engine among the entire 911 series – a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre 6-cylinder horizontally-opposed motor rated at 500 hp at 8,250 rpm and 460 Nm torque at 5,750 rpm.

The last Porsche World Roadshow for the UAE was held two years ago at the Dubai Autodrome. It was a superb event for highlighting the entire Porsche line-up in one go. Seemingly open only to existing Porsche customers and us media types, it was a well-organised event that got us some wheel-time with the 2009 models. German carmaker Porsche has announced yet another variant of its aging 911, dubbed the 911 Speedster, which will make its official debut at the upcoming 2010 Paris Motor Show. Judging by the lukewarm response to our last 911 story, interest in the 911 is waning fast, and new variants of the same old formula isn’t going to cut it.

Almost as if to spite the German manufacturer, U.S. tuning firm Switzer sends out a release claiming that their R911S package already offers a power-to-weight ratio which simply “eviscerates” Porsche’s newest factory flagship, the new-for-2011 911 GT2 RS. Switzer also offers the R911S Carbon, a suite of lightweight carbon-fibre body panels that sheds more weight.
