The North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit Auto Show, is normally the largest show of its kind every year, but the 2010 edition is a less grand affair than before, with a limited number of new launches and even fewer extravagant concepts. The 2009 Dubai Motor Show is running from the 16th to the 20th of December, featuring lots of glitzy luxury cars and tons of supercars, even though it was supposed to have a ‘green’ theme this year. A few international debuts also took place here, with the Kepler Motion, the Luxgen7 SUV, the Brabus GLK V12 and the Kia Cadenza being the notable ones. The Los Angeles Auto Show is one of the smaller international motor shows, with numerous no-shows at the 2009 edition due to the recession. There are only two concept cars and maybe ten all-new models displayed. All-new cars to look out for include the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe, the 2011 Infiniti M and the 2011 Ford Mustang EcoBoost V6. The 1st DriveArabia Meet was held last weekend, on Friday the 13th no less. Two of us organised it, and ironically enough, 13 people showed up for an event that was conceived just a couple of days prior this November. The turn-out was relatively great, considering it was competing for time with the Diabetes Walk, the Motorsports Festival and some Pakistan cricket match, all on the same day in Dubai. Also, we kept the meet intentionally low-key, so a smaller number of people could interact without getting lost in the crowd. These peeps are now in our inner circle.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association show, better known as SEMA, is on again in Las Vegas. The 2009 edition of this aftermarket show, one of the largest of its kind in the world, is more of a showcase for American tuner companies than any other, with this year being dominated by excessive Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro variants. Among the crowd of muscle cars are manufacturers such as Toyota, Hyundai, Suzuki and Subaru, who chose to participate whereas many others have dropped out due to the recession.
