The 2012 Geneva Motor Show on March 6th and 7th, quite possible Europe’s largest auto show even though Switzerland has no functioning automotive industry, yet again plays host to a number of production debuts and inquisitive concepts. New models include the VW Golf GTI Cabriolet, the Volvo V40, the Ford Fiesta ST, the Lexus RX and the Hyundai i20. Ironically, the concepts outnumber the real debuts this year. These include the Bentley EXP 9 F 4×4, the Infiniti Emerg-E, the Nissan Hi-Cross, the SsangYong XIV-2 and more.

The Chicago Auto Show in the United States is one of the smallest of the “major” shows, but the 2012 edition this February the 8th still played host to a number of debuts. These include the 2013 Jeep Mopar Compass, the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser, the 2013 Nissan 370Z, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible, the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe, the 2013 GMC Acadia and the 2013 Acura ILX. Concepts include the Kia Trackster, the Scion iQ Pit Boss and the Fiat 500 Stinger.

The Big Boys Toys show, held at the Atlantis for 2012, from the 9th to the 11th of February, is a show involving all sorts of stuff, to put it simply. Featuring everything from cars, bikes and boats to gadgets, games and fashion, it is intended to showcase the random pleasure you can pursue if you have the money. America’s largest motoring exhibition, the Detroit Auto Show, is back for 2012. As usual, it is playing host to countless debuts, such as the new 2013 iterations of the Ford Fusion, the Lexus LX 570, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, among others. The 5th DriveArabia Meet was held on Saturday, the 24th of December, at the tail-end of 2011. We kept it a low-key event at Dubai Festival City, sending direct invites to a few regulars at the last minute, while announcing the event only a couple of times publicly. Those who showed up were in for a treat, as the chief guest of this meet was the 2012 Nissan GT-R, the latest fresh-out-of-the-factory iteration of the Japanese supercar. The 2011 Dubai Motor Show, held from the 10th to the 14th of November, remains the biggest auto show in the region, with multiple GCC launches and large stands showcasing cars that will hit the market soon as 2012 models. The 4th DriveArabia Meet was held on October 1st at the Dubai Outlet Mall. The “chief guest” of our small gathering was the 2012 Volkswagen Golf GTI. It was great again, as some of our regulars showed up, as well as some new faces. We had some fun doing repeated runs with the VW’s awesome automatic parallel-parking system, checking out how tight of a spot it could fit into. Some of the attendees shown up later in the night, during the free DriveArabia-sponsored dinner, so they are unfortunately not in these pictures.

One of the largest auto shows in the world, the 2011 edition of the Frankfurt International Motor Show is yet again playing host to various debuts and a whole slew of concepts as well as a notable number of tuners. Of note are the 2012 Porsche 911, 2012 Volkswagen Up, 2012 Mazda CX-5, 2012 Hyundai i30 and the 2012 Ford Focus ST. Among concepts, there are the Cadillac Ciel, the Kia GT, the Ford Evos, the Fisker Surf and the Volvo Concept You. The tuners showed off the Eterniti Hemera Cayenne, the Brabus Zero Emission E-Class, the AC Schnitzer 1-Series M Coupe and the Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo Convertible.

What was supposed to simply be a quick mini-meet in celebration of being the first one to review the 2011 Dodge Charger SE turned out to be better than expected, as six people turned up at the Dubai Outlet Mall location. Advertised only on our Facebook fan-page and our MyRide forums, it was to be an event for our top fans, as everyone was treated to a Burger King/KFC dinner, sponsored by us, and everyone got a chance to take the Charger for a spin around the block with no strings attached, an unannounced bonus for showing up.

The second edition of the Middle East Motor Tuning show is in full swing at the Sharjah Expo Centre. Running from the 12th of May to the 14th, it is a short event showcasing various locally-based tuners from Dubai and Sharjah, such as Al Ghandi, Liberty Motorsports and West Coast Customs, as well as showcasing a variety of classic cars. Also on display are various cars modified with ridiculous sound systems for the audio contest. And te show marks the first public display of the Korean Spirra supercar. Tickets cost Dhs 25, so it is advisable you go at night to catch the Arab version of drifting.
