Back in the late 80s and up till the late 90s, Ford offered a tasty hyper-tuned version of their best-selling sedan in America, calling it the Taurus SHO, and powering it with Yamaha-tuned “Super High Output” engines that came from Japan. It died out later, but with the proper revival of the Taurus comes the rebirth of the Taurus SHO, this time powered by an in-house 3.5-litre turbocharged EcoBoost V6.
In Ford’s GCC line-up, the Taurus badge had pretty much disappeared at the turn of the century. However, the name was kept alive in the United States, as the car we know as the Five Hundred was sold as the Taurus in America. The full-size sedan is a competent but boring car, and Ford went back to the drawing board to completely redesign the model, apparently inspired by the immensely smarter design philosophy of their European division. The result is the 2010 Ford Taurus, unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show yesterday.
