Jeep is an absolutely amazing brand that earned its heritage the hard way. It wasn’t by becoming popular as the ride of choice for dictators or royalty. It wasn’t by taking part in racing events that entertained a niche crowd. And it wasn’t by building cheap reliable transportation. Oh no, the “hard way” meant winning World War 2. Times have changed though, but current-owners Fiat-Chrysler seem to have strived hard to make sure some of that legendary heritage has rubbed off on the all-new Jeep Renegade.

The newly-branded Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has announced a full-blown five-year plan for its extensive brand portfolio that includes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati and Ferrari. Mopar is a name that’s well-known in the States, but not elsewhere. It started out as the brand for the Chrysler Group’s parts and accessories division. Now they are pushing hard in the the Middle East market as they aim to improve service standards and customer care, as well as offer easier access to aftermarket accessories. If you remember, we had gone to Italy last month to drive a couple of cars, including the Fiat 500L and the Alfa Romeo 4C. We also drove the latest version of the Fiat 500 Cult, a new trim level with a new engine and a manual gearbox, before it was even revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last week. We’d never driven a 500 before that, but damn is it good with the Euro-spec hardware.

This was one overseas media event that kept throwing us surprises by the bucketful. I was invited for a trip to Milan by Fiat to drive something or the other. What we got was a romp in a manual 500 with a new turbo engine as well as a brief run in an insane Alfa Romeo 4C, but more on all that later. The car in focus during the event was the Fiat 500L Trekking, a recently-released crossover that’s tentatively headed to UAE shores by the end of summer this year.

There are two new Fiat models on displayed at the combined Fiat-Chrysler Group stand in the Dubai Motor Show. Alongside the Fiat 500, that’s been in the UAE for a couple of years now, are the Fiat 500 Abarth and the Fiat 500L. Both cars are here to gauge public reaction, which will determine whether either of those cars join the regular Fiat 500 in the GCC line-up.
