McLaren’s Hamilton wins 2009 Hungarian F1 GP


Though overshadowed by Felipe Massa’s serious freak accident in qualifying that almost saw him killed by flying debris, the 2009 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix went ahead as scheduled. Lewis Hamilton brought McLaren their first victory of the season after a surprise result in Hungary on Sunday afternoon, his dominant success also marking Martin Whitmarsh’s first as team principal and the first for a KERS-equipped car. Kimi Raikkonen was second for Ferrari, containing a challenge from Mark Webber’s Red Bull.

Sometimes death can strike in the most unexpected ways. This unfortunate accident in a Formula 2 race led to the death of 18-year-old driver Henry Surtees, after the tyre from an earlier crash hit him on the head, rendering him unconscious with his foot on the accelerator. He died in hospital. His father, John Surtees, was a Formula 1 racer in the 1960s.

American automaker General Motors has filed for bankruptcy. As analysts have known for months finally got confirmed, the largest car manufacturer in the world filed for “Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection” on June 1, 2009 in a New York court, declaring US$ 82 billion in assets and US$ 172 billion in debts. However, General Motors Middle East claims that they are unaffected.
