Hatchbacks are only popular in Europe. Anywhere else, sedans always outsell any other body style, and China is no different. That’s why Peugeot has launched a new sedan model specifically for the Chinese market, called the 408. Interestingly, it is not a replacement for the 407, but rather a sedan version of the 308. The real replacement of the 407, slated for next year, will be called the 508.
The Mini started life in 1959 as a British car for the masses. Built by the company later known as Austin-Rover, the little car was so cheap that Ford dissassembled one and tried to replicate it, but couldn’t do it cost-effectively and gave up. That Mr. Bean original was in production right up till 2000, when BMW bought out the firm and redesigned the Mini as an expensive niche model. But by 2001, there were already a slew of modern affordable cars to take its place, not least of which is the Honda Jazz. Both the Mini and the Jazz are now in their second generation.

The North American International Auto Show, better known as the Detroit Auto Show, is normally the largest show of its kind every year, but the 2010 edition is a less grand affair than before, with a limited number of new launches and even fewer extravagant concepts. The flavour of the year seems to be environmentally-friendlier cars such as the Ford Focus and the Honda CR-Z, and near-production concepts such as the Chevrolet Aveo and the Cadillac XTS. Actual new models include the Ford Mustang GT 5.0, the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, the Lincoln MKX and the Jeep Liberty Renegade,
After spending the past year peddling the Scirocco hatchback as a ‘sports coupe,’ Volkswagen has finally come up with a real coupe. Presently only a design study, we give it the award for the Most Boring Concept Car Of The Decade, and we will allow VW to quote that in their magazine ads in exchange for advertising money.
The next-generation 2011 Ford Focus is making its worldwide debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show this month. Available in both the 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback body styles, the all-new Focus will start production for Europe and North America late in 2010, with a local market launch early in 2011, and the GCC will then follow.
