First Drive: Nio EL8 in the UAE
Nio recently launched in the MENA region, with the first store in the UAE. It introduced its flagship SUV, the Nio EL8. This sizeable electric SUV pushes the boundaries in terms of size and focuses on delivering a premium experience for the user.
Exterior and Space
The Nio EL8 is undoubtedly a large vehicle, surpassing the 5-metre length mark. However, it is not that wide, measuring 199 cm, ensuring it fits into standard parking spaces and allows sufficient room for door operation.
The interior space of the EL8 stands out. Thanks to its extended dimensions, it features three rows of seating configured as a six-seater rather than the traditional seven. This layout prioritises passenger comfort, offering generous legroom and headroom for all occupants.
Even the third-row passengers enjoy amenities like adjustable air conditioning and USB ports. For an even more luxurious experience, the “Executive” trim adds larger seats and a rear fridge.
While it offers plenty of comfort, the EL8 is not the most practical SUV for cargo. Folding the seats creates additional space, but it won’t rival a van. However, with the third row in use, there’s still room for small luggage.
Cabin and Technology
The EL8’s interior showcases a minimalist, futuristic design. Physical buttons are nearly nonexistent, and most functions are managed through a central display or via “Nomi,” Nio’s AI assistant.
Nomi’s animated robot interface on the dashboard adds a playful touch. It can perform basic requests like navigation to a specific address or outside temperature. Access to Nomi is not limited to the front driver and passenger; even passengers sitting in the third row can interact with it.
On the audio front, Nio delivers a commendable in-house sound system, with clear output from its 23 speaker systems and a power output of 2,230 watts.
The front passenger seat also has a “Lounge Seat” feature. Activating Comfort Mode reclines the backrest and adjusts the headrest, seat cushion, leg rest, and footrest to provide a zero-gravity reclining experience.
Nio EL8 Performance
Under the hood, the EL8 houses a powertrain capable of delivering 653 hp and 850 Nm of torque. This translates into rapid acceleration, which is available on demand. It can go from 0 to 100 kph in a claimed 4.1 seconds.
The dual-chamber air suspension is a highlight, enhancing ride quality. It also helps during cornering and allows for fast recovery to a neutral position.
In terms of range, the EL8 achieves 545 km, according to the NEDC.
Battery Swap
While all Nio cars have fast charging capability, the unique feature remains Nio’s Battery Swap Stations, enabling a full battery replacement in minutes.
The first battery swap station in the UAE will open sometime in early 2025. Unlike in Europe, where customers lease a battery, the MENA region will offer a monthly subscription model. For example, you can buy a monthly package of 5 battery swaps.
Also, the customer is charged on how much charge there is in the swap station battery. If the battery is charged 70 percent, the customer will be charged accordingly.
Another advantage of battery swapping is that customers can interchange battery sizes. If the customer knows he is going on a long trip soon, he can get a bigger battery with more range at the swap station.
We will know more details once the first battery swap station officially opens in early 2025.
Driving Dynamics
The EL8 delivers a decent blend of comfort and stability. Its controlled tilting during cornering and quiet cabin enhances long-distance journeys.
However, like many electric cars, its acceleration can be deceptive. Few road users expect a vehicle of this size to move this fast.
Nio EL8 Verdict
The Nio EL8 offers a well-rounded package of comfort, performance, and innovative technology at a price point that undercuts traditional luxury rivals. Its six-seater layout, advanced suspension, and battery-swap capability give it a unique edge in the segment. While some areas, like infotainment and AI functionality, could use refinement, the EL8 is a compelling option for buyers seeking a premium electric SUV focusing on space and modern tech.
The EL8 is poised to attract families and tech enthusiasts looking for a distinctive electric vehicle with a touch of luxury. Nio’s competitive pricing strategy and feature-rich offerings make it an interesting alternative to established players in the market. The Nio EL8 starts at AED 359,000.
