First Look: All New Fourth-Gen 2025 BMW X3

The BMW X3 first made its debut in 2004 and went on to become one of the brand’s best-selling models. The 5-seater luxury crossover builds on the success of its predecessor with improvements in its fourth generation in 2025.

The car is overall larger, with a revised exterior design and chassis, tweaked powertrains, updated infotainment, and driver-assist features.

BMW X3 Engine and Specs

Both the 4-cylinder X3 30 and high-performance 6-cylinder X3 M50 variants have all-wheel drive, which is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The previous variant, the M40i, has been replaced with the M50. BMW has dropped the “i” from the names of gas-powered engines, reserving the letter exclusively for EVs.

The X30 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 255 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque and takes 6.0 seconds from 0 to 100 kph. In comparison, the M50 variant packs a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder engine delivering 393 horsepower and 580 Nm of torque and claims to go 0 to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds. Both variants get a mild hybrid component and a slight increase in output.

BMW X3 Exteriors

The latest BMW X3 features a redesigned exterior design and chassis. It has been elongated by 1.3 inches and widened by 1.1 inches. Additionally, the vehicle’s height has been lowered by 1 inch to 65.4 inches for a sportier look.

New design features include the reimagined kidney grille with contoured lighting and double-light signature headlights, standard on the X3 M50. The daytime driving lights, side marker lights, and turn signal indicators in the headlights are now all produced by L-shaped overlapping light sources. Full LED headlights with cornering light functions are optionally available.

Interiors and Tech

BMW has added a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a new gear selection toggle to the cabin. The X3 gets standard ventilated and electronically adjustable seats. The base model features faux leather seats, which can be upgraded to faux suede or genuine leather.

The model gets the BMW iDrive9, which reduces the number of physical controls in the cabin. A new 14.9-inch BMW Curved Display with an interaction bar gives access to infotainment features. The driver can connect their phone to serve as a controller for the gaming experience on the curved display. The driver can also unlock their car from the phone when in range.

Safety Features

The X3 has an NCAP rating of 5 stars and six standard airbags. BMW offers a broad range of driver assistance systems with optional upgrades. Standard features include Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assistance, and Speed Limit Info, along with the Driving Assistant, which includes Active Blind Spot Detection and a manual Speed Limit Assistant. The Parking Assistant, now standard, incorporates features such as the Backup Assistant and a Rear View Camera.

There’s also a new Parking Assistant Professional Package, which maximises the X3’s automated parking abilities. It includes self-parking in a predesignated parking space saved in the vehicle, and entering or exiting tight spaces can be controlled from outside the car by using the My BMW App on the driver’s phone.
