2023 Opel Astra EV Hatchback and Wagon debuts in Europe

The small EV space has been heating up recently as more customers are willing to pick up one of these electric machines for their daily commute. Stellantis has been trying to cash in on this segment with the Peugeot E-308. Now Opel is bringing the popular Astra name into the EV space with the 2023 Opel Astra electric hatchback and estate.

As expected, the 2023 Opel Astra electric borrows many under-the-skin elements from the E-308. So it gets a modified version of the platform intended for ICE-powered cars. The power comes from a single electric motor that produces 156 hp and 270 Nm of torque, 10 Nm more than the E-308. Just like the Peugeot, the Astra electric will be front-wheel-drive only.

The battery is also the same 54-kWh unit, which can be charged up to 80 percent in 30 minutes when hooked to a 100 kW DC charging station. Despite the mechanical similarities, the 2023 Opel Astra electric can cover more distance on one charge. The maximum range for the Opel is 416 km in the WLTP cycle, 16 more than its cousin.

The top speed of the 2023 Opel Astra electric is a healthy 170 kph, while many other EVs from the same segment are capped at 150. Practicality has taken a hit due to the battery pack, but the wagon still offers a decent 1,553 litres of storage with the rear seats folded.

The 2023 Opel Astra electric offers more options to Stellantis’ Europe EV line-up. Will it come to our shores? Only time will tell.
