Three-row Volvo EX90 SUV debuts as flagship EV
Volvo has been on a solid electrification run, despite the existence of the EV-only spin-off brand, the Polestar. Volvo EX90 adds to this range as the brand’s EV flagship and an electric twin to the popular XC90 SUV.
Unlike many other EVs, Volvo EX90 brings no groundbreaking design that puts UFOs to shame. Instead, it follows a more conservative format similar to its internal combustion-equipped twin. But f course, it has a ton of EV-specific elements too. The most significant change is buried under that akin in the form of a new platform. The EV rides on a brand-new platform with a sizeable 111-kWh battery.
With this reserve, the Volvo claims that EX90 can travel up to 480 km on a single charge. This figure is not certified by EPA yet, though. Power comes from two electric motors, one for each axle. The combined output is 496 hp and, in classic EV fashion, a high torque output of 910 Nm. Charging speeds are not public yet, but Volvo claims it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes.
The Volvo EX90 is such a big tech fest that Volvo calls it “a highly advanced computer on wheels”. The EV utilizes Unreal Engine, an advanced 3D tool from Epic Games used to produce advanced video games, for its screen graphics and computing power. These crisp graphics will shine through a 14.5-inch touchscreen at the centre and another screen behind the steering wheel. The big screen also supports multiple built-in Google features.
Everything is connected via a standard 5G connection that can stream music through a Bowers and Wilkins sound system that even gets the headrest integrated into the headrests. Another fancy trick up the sleeve of the Volvo EX90 is a phone key tech, which turns your smartphone into a car key.
Safety is another arena that the Volvo EX90 focuses on. Volvo claims that it is the safest Volvo ever produced. It has advanced driving assistance equipment like multiple sensors, cameras, and radars. All of these are packed into that noticeable bulb on the roofline. Though it may look a little odd, it makes the Volvo EX90 the first Volvo to be equipped with all the necessary hardware to facilitate unsupervised autonomous driving in the future.
