2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC walks into its second generation

Mercedes-Benz GLC is an essential model for the brand, as it is one of their main revenue generators. The popular compact crossover now enters its second generation, or third if you count the GLK, with a slightly larger body, improved interiors, and new powertrains.

There are few short-lived Mercedes-Benz models. One among them was the Mercedes-Benz GLK which came in almost a decade ago. But its revival as the Mercedes-Benz GLC has been quite a success for the brand as it took off. In its second generation, it grows bigger than its predecessor, albeit by only a little. The grown dimensions have no effect on the aerodynamics which in fact is better. The drag coefficient drops from 0.31 to 0.29. The front fascia and the rear end sports many updates but none too drastic to take away its identity as a GLC.

The interior, like all Mercedes-Benz models, is top-notch, borrowing many bits from the S-Class flagship sedan. A central screen measuring 11.9-inches in size is mounted in a portrait fashion, just like the stately sedan. Another 12.3-inch screen joins the party as a digital instrument cluster. Many other tech and comfort feature that we normally associate vehicles of this segment with are all present. This list includes heated front seats, wireless charging, and more. A Driving Assistance Package improves the new GLC in the department of safety. Depending on the market, it may also offer 4.5-degree rear-wheel steering.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged M254 engine, paired with a 48V mild-hybrid technology. In the rear-wheel-drive GLC 300 and all-wheel drive GLC 300 4MATIC, this setup produces 258 hp and 400 Nm. An integrated starter-generator can add up to 23 hp and 200 Nm worth of boost when needed. Both versions get a 9-speed automatic transmission. More models will join the lineup soon, including a plug-in hybrid version as well as the hot AMG versions.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC will lock horns with the BMW X3, Audi Q3, Lexus NX, and more when it arrives on our shores.
