Ferrari SF90 Spider drops the top on hybrid supercar

Ferrari’s busy camp is bustling with new projects. In the midst of all this commotion, they have taken time to chop the roof off their hybrid supercar to produce a gorgeous Ferrari SF90 Spider, complete with a folding hard top that can hide itself in 14 seconds.

The beautiful flowing lines of the SF90 Stradale Coupe are all here. Thanks to the folding hardtop, the convertible can retain the acclaimed silhouette of the SF90 Stradale coupe in just a flick of a button. The new hardtop assembly can fold away in 14 seconds and when it is folded, it takes up only 100 litres of space. Extensive use of aluminium leads to the hardtop being 40 kilos lighter than traditional folding hardtops. The hardtop can also be operated while the vehicle is on the move.

If you are nitpicky about the additional weight that any convertible will carry, you can tick the optional Assetto Fiorano package. This uses more carbon fibre and titanium to shave off 21 kilos, bringing the total dry weight of the SF90 Spider down to 1,670 kg, just 100 kg more than the SF90 Stradale coupe.

The added weight has minimal effect on the performance. The 0-100 kph sprint is dealt within 2.5 seconds, just like the coupe. The only area where the SF90 Spider falls short of the Stradale is in the 0-200 kph run, which takes the Spider 7 seconds to complete while the coupe does it in 6.7 seconds. The SF90 Spider is still powered by the same PHEV system as the Stradale, utilizing a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 and three electric motors, producing 986 hp and 800 Nm.

Ferrari SF90 Spider perfectly combines the ballistic performance of the SF90 Stradale and its beautiful design with unlimited headroom. Yet, it is just a minor update from the Ferrari stable that is gearing up for many major launches coming in the near future including the Purosangue SUV and a LaFerrari successor.
