McLaren 570S Spider drops its top

McLaren has dropped the top on the 570S to create the first Spider model in its entry level “Sports” series. Joining the 675LT Spider and the 650S Spider from their “Super” series, the 570S Spider will offer air-in-the-hair motoring action at a slightly lower price.

The 570S Spider is fitted with the same folding hard-top mechanism used in the 675LT Spider and 650S Spider. The conversion to a droptop has added 46 kg to the car. The rigidity of the structure is claimed to be preserved and no reinforcements to the chassis were required. The roof can be closed in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 40 kph. If the wind goes a bit overboard, the driver can raise an electronically operated wind deflector to ease the buffeting in the cabin. And when the roof is down, more of the engine note from the optional sport exhaust can seep into the cabin. The 570S Spider is fitted with a rear spoiler that is 12.7mm taller than the one on the Coupe. This compensates for the offset in aerodynamics caused by dropping the top.

The 570S Spider’s colour palette is an elaborate one with 20 colours to choose from, including three new ones —
Cuarcao Blue, Vega Blue, and Sicilian Yellow. The rear buttresses, roof and the windshield pillars can be painted in an optional shade of dark Palladium Gray. The rear spoiler comes in body colour as standard and an optional visible-carbon finish is available. A new set of 10-spoke forged wheels tops off the visual package.

The 570S Spider is powered by the same 3.8-litre biturbo V8 that does duty in the coupe. The engine produces 562 hp and 600 Nm of torque. This firepower endows the 570S Spider with the same performance figures as the Coupe. It completes the 0-100 kph run in 3.2 seconds and then screams onto a top speed of 328 kph. With the roof down, the top speed is decreased to 315 kph.

The 570S Spider was revealed publicly at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that runs June 29 to July 2. Deliveries will start in September, with the UAE and GCC getting it soon after, likely priced at around Dhs 800,000.
