Chevrolet Camaro recall issued for all 2010-2014 models

General Motors has announced a recall for every current-generation Chevrolet Camaro built since it was re-introduced in 2010, adding up to 512,000 cars.

The issue is that a driver’s knee can bump the key and knock the switch out of the “run” position, causing an engine stall. That disables the power steering and brake assistance, and therefore could cause loss of control.

General Motors says that it knows of three crashes and four minor injuries from the problem. They said the airbags did not go off in the crashes, but it is unknown if the non-deployment was caused by the switches.

General Motors also says that the Camaro switches met its safety specifications, unlike those in their other recall controversy involving 2.6 million cars. That other problem, involving the faulty ignition switches in decade-old Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion models, has caused more than 50 crashes and at least 13 deaths, and is at the centre of a U.S. government investigation and lawsuits because GM covered up the problem for the past decade. Those affected sedan models were not sold in the GCC.

The Camaro does come to the GCC though. The existing key is of the switchblade type, and GM will replace it with a regular key and a separate fob. Apparently drivers who sit close to the steering column are most affected by the problem.

  1. Isn’t it just weird that such critical areas from reknowned manufacturers gets neglected, what’s happening? Are Chinese people getting inside the hoods of such cars too now may be? Even after paying thousands and thousands we cannot be certain that we will get a world class product!

  3. Seems Prototype building, testing for years are too much overhyped. Takes years after the car launch to “find” the fault and then wait longer for the repair/recall. Gone are the days of proper engineering. An example to quote, once upon a time,not quite long ago, one of the German auto giants had their slogan as, “engineered like no other car in the world”. Once their product started having reliability issues, they aptly changed their tagline into “The future of the automobile, unknowingly predicting the state of the things to be expected from almost all major auto manufacturers . Hope that their new products hold up to their latest tagline “The best or nothing.” Fingers crossed !

  6. I just got my 2014 RS V6, and this happened to me once right in the middle of the road, the car just lost power,luckily i wasnt going fast, else it could have been disastrous. It hasn’t happened since but it is a major cause for concern.
    I hope Al Ghandi does a recall and has the Key Fobs changed.

  7. I hope gm will replace the whole FOB not just removing the “metal key” from the FOB and separating the Key. it looks awful for a nice car like this!!!!
