Chevrolet Caprice has supposed “unintentended acceleration” in Saudi Arabia

chevrolet-caprice-unintended-acceleration-ksa
Police in Saudi Arabia apparently shot at a speeding Chevrolet Caprice to stop the vehicle after its Kuwaiti driver reported its brakes were not working.

According to the Sabq via Emirates 24/7, the man was driving his Caprice on the motorway between the capital Riyadh and the central town of Kharj at around 180 kph when the brakes stopped responding.

The panicked driver then called the police, who sent several patrol cars to clear the road ahead to prevent accidents. A patrol waited on the road for the car to pass it and an officer then fired at the rear glass. The brake system then, apparently, started working at once and the car came to a standstill.

Note that this trick was thought up in Saudi Arabia, and only seems to be used in Saudi Arabia. The last few unintended-acceleration incidents in the UAE, involving everything from a Mazda CX-9 to a Toyota Land Cruiser, have all ended in forced crashes.

What do you think?

  1. Could you elaborate on this “trick”, please. I don’t get how shooting at the rear windshield engages the brakes automatically.

    • Author

The theory was that breaking the wires of the rear glass sets off the alarm system and immobiliser, thereby shutting down the car. Of course, that doesn’t explain how the brakes suddenly start working, as an immobiliser shuts off the engine.

Of course, the last time they tried it, that incident turned out that the driver was faking it.

    • And it’s fake this time too. If that was the case, then we wouldn’t be seeing all those high speed chases.

    • Just one point about your theory. If the engine shuts off, the power brakes would stop working, as the hydraulic pump that’s run by the engine wouldn’t be running. I don’t know if any of you tried braking without the assist of the engine, it feels like the brake is jammed stuck.

  2. Do you mean the brakes really started functioning after shooting at its rear glass? If yes, what is the connection? Can you explain the mechanism?
    I’m deadly curious!!!

  3. And did that guy get a speeding ticket for driving at over 180 Km/h ??

  4. Wondering how the insurance company is dealing with this !!

  5. lool, i love Saudi. good work cops, you guys are genius for figuring out connection between rear glass and brakes.

  6. That means in all those videos I saw (silly me) of high speed chases in US; the cops had no idea that car manufacturers had put some ghost in the brake-system which automatically gets activated once rear glass is broken!

Saudi cops should start training centers for US cops!

    LOL….

  7. It would be a better idea all automobiles have an inbuilt system where by it would be possible to break the rear glass mechanically by driver itself. This would cater as an emergency system in case of such incident ( Over speeding )
    Simple lever type would do.

  8. Brief summation of the story:

Kuwaiti guy driving the Chevrolet car with the speed of 180 kph along Capital Riyadh and Central Al-Kharj road, all of the sudden the break mechanism system was totally uncontrollable.

Definitely, the first move was done by the operator, he was called the police officer informing his situation then the officer alarming all the existing motorist which is in the same road.

According to the allegations and some statement, officer was shoot the windshield as the recourse to reactivate the break mechanism system of the car?

    Comments:
    1) Chevrolet equipped on Automatic Break System (ABS) with electronic device controlled by the Break Mechanism System of the car. Windshield is a part of electronic windows system but it is not related to ABS in regards with electronic functions.

    2) If the operator/driver lost his ABS then release first his foot in accelerator pedal enable to slowdown the movement of the car or turn-off the engine until fully stop.

  9. Now I know what to do when I see idiots zooming across lanes.

  10. to our chuhadry sahab i believe once you cross in to ksa or any gcc country so far from my exp you are required to buy full insurance at the border i pay 70 riyals to cover my car in ksa and 100 for my family

  11. Saudi are some weirdly intelligent ppl don’t underestimate them they should be directing Bond Films.

  12. Or maybe the driver’s brake got activated after Police shot at him !

  13. Hello guys,

This is all fake, usually real stories are far away from us.
Police has to guide that driver that how to slow down the car by releasing accelerator and shifting an automatic drive gear from D to L3 then L2 and so on until the car goes stop smoothly.
There is no logic by breaking window, will activate car immobilizer/ car anti-theft system. Since you unlock your car by genuine remote control, the car immobilizer system goes De-activated once you unlock the car and start the engine.
These days we all are far from the truth.
