Video of the week: NASCAR Daytona crash leaves 11 fans injured
Last Saturday’s NASCAR Daytona race, ended with several race-cars destroyed in a huge crash, with bits of the cars flying into the grandstands, leaving at least 11 fans injured.
The pile-up started when Regan Smith’s car was shunted sideways as he was coming towards the checkered flag. This caused many other cars to crash, sending Kyle Larson’s car flying into the fence that separates the track from the grandstands. The aftermath is unclear in the video, but apparently parts of that car went into the crowd, while the burning engine itself was wedged in the fence.
Driver Tony Stewart slid past the wreckage to take the win at the Nationwide Series race, but skipped the usual post-victory celebration. The second-place car seems to drift across the finish line, as the crash continues well past the end of the race. The condition of the fans is unknown.
