VW Golf GTI gets Cabriolet variant for 2013
Volkswagen has added a soft-top convertible variant to their Golf GTI hot hatch. It comes equipped with a standard electro-hydraulic drive that opens the top in just 9.0 seconds and can be operated while driving at speeds of up to 30 kph.
Under the hood is a 207 hp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that gets upto 280 Nm of torque from 1,700 rpm. It is mated to either a 6-speed manual or dual-clutch auto gearbox.
Although the car is expected to have a female following, VW say that most men will be attracted to 0 to 100 kph time of 7.3 seconds, making it the fastest GTI convertible ever. Other claims include a top speed of 237 kph and a fuel economy figure of 7.6 l/100 km, making it among the most economical models in its class.
The convertible has a roll-over protection system and a very useable 250 litre boot. Additionally, the split rear bench backrest can be folded, which significantly increases cargo capacity.
The soft-top variant will be shipped to European dealers in mid-June. There is no word on whether it will come to the GCC, but if it does, it likely won’t show up before late 2013.
