Long-term update: 2011 Infiniti QX56 on working vacation

If you’re wondering why we haven’t posted an update on our borrowed 2011 Infiniti QX56 for a while, it’s because it had gone back via tow-truck to Nissan on a working vacation a week ago, namely for test-drives by other magazines. It is due to be back with us today hopefully.

In the week before it left us, we drove it to Abu Dhabi to attend the Porsche World Roadshow at Yas Marina. Having been racistically kicked off the guest list for Yas Marina events by Lexus, General Motors, Jaguar, Bentley, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz, we were thrilled to finally be able to get some track-time via Porsche.

The drive to Abu Dhabi was supremely comforting, with adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warnings and sound insulation making sure we went to sleep on the way and drove while snoring at speeds of upto a legal 160 kph.

The highway drive also brought down our fuel consumption to an even 15.4 litres/100 km. The amazing bit is, after we came back from Abu Dhabi and continued to use the QX56 around Dubai’s freeways, we’ve still managed to keep the fuel consumption pegged at 15.4 litres/100 km for the rest of the week without even trying. We just took it easy on the throttle all the time like we do with our own cars. With 560 Nm of peak torque on tap, a lot of it is available below 3000 rpm so we never have to push it too much to gain speed. We’re already been told by readers that they hit these kinds of numbers with their Maximas and Prados. It’s all about throttle-control finesse, and after more than a month with this truck, we’re finally getting the hang of the softly-sprung right pedal.

We are now awaiting the return of our environmentally-conscious T-Rex, no doubt with our average fuel consumption figures screwed up again by other reviewers.
