Honda Civic 2012 sedan and coupe unveiled

The “all-new” 2012 Honda Civic has been unveiled, at least in U.S. guise. It remains a good car, but it is not as ground-breaking as the outgoing version was back in 2006, and in fact looks like a facelift rather than a full redesign.

For the U.S. market, Honda is offering the 2012 Civic in six different variants. The most familiar to us will be the 4-door sedan version, offering a 140 hp 1.8-litre “i-VTEC” 4-cylinder engine, mated to a 5-speed automatic, all the same as before, with the only improvement being a 6% increase in highway fuel economy. The Americans will also get a coupe version with two doors, as well as an “HF” sedan version that will feature better aerodynamics for a 1% further improvement in highway efficiency.

Also on offer in the U.S. are a Civic Hybrid sedan with a 110 hp 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine aided by a lithium-ion battery and the “HF” aerodynamics, as well as hot Civic Si models in sedan and coupe form, both powered by a new 200 hp 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine with 230 Nm of torque and a 6-speed manual. Unfortunately, as before, none of these American-built models may make it to the Middle East.

The 2012 Honda Civic was already spotted hot-weather testing in Dubai, in regular sedan as well as hybrid versions. It remains to be seen which versions make it to showrooms in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and other GCC countries when it is launched in the summer.

Keep track of updates in the Honda Civic buyer guide.

  1. Shame on you Honda!

How on earth do you downgrade the design of your world wide known car to this shape??

    Shame on you…

I thought you could do better than that…

we are in 2011 and you are making such desgins??

Shall I design for you using photoshop??

  2. isn’t that more like a Honda City?? (my first car)

  3. Honda should stop making so called new car…some people accusing Kia/hyundai for design copy??? whats this then?? what a shame for Honda…

  4. Apparently Honda civic’s main market are avg. middle aged / old people which explains the conservative design… They say that Honda is an brand bought mostly by old people in the UK aside from the Civic EP3… For me this brand lost its shine a decade ago…

  5. At first they messed up with the Accord by making Crosstour and now they totally ruined the image of Civic,
i would rather prefer new 2012 KIA Optima over this Fugly thing….

  6. Can it get uglier?!! what’s wrong with japanese, if their brains dried out, let them hire some Italian designers like the Koreans did

    • Exactly! I think they still have their original designers, unfortunately, they’re still living in their 90’s.

Jap Cars, please make way for the younger designers, retire the grandpa designers.

      Just my two cents.

  7. Look at the coupe design and then have a look at Hyundai Tucson front specially fron Bumper side.

  8. Isn’t the center console been copied from Optima 2011 which is tilted towards the driver!!!!! what the hell is going on with Honda..

    • Author

Dashboards tilted towards the driver aren’t anything new really. Been around since the 80s in different cars.

    • Good for the driver but would be interesting to see how the side passenger would operate the dual climate controls if it ever does come with it.

  9. Frankly, It is time for consumers to start forming grups or unions and start to agree on stopping to buy japanese cars anymore, they are stupid, overpriced and ugly, we can start with ourselves, we must boycot these companies, they even are not good value for money anymore because maybe they may get you some more money when you sell them, but the are overpriced, I mean If I buy fully loaded Accord for 126 K for the 4 cyl with navigation, maybe after 5 years I will sell it for 60 K, ok its good amount of money but I lost 66 K, while if I opt for the Optima or Sonata fully loaded with 89 K (and these two cars even have more options) then after 5 years I will sell it for 30 or 35 K which means it is the same, or maybe better because sonata and optima maintanence will be cheaper for sure.

  10. @Mash: its not new but new for asian manufacturer i think which Kia brings first. BTW i am totally frustrated by Honda. they should hire some good designers…

  11. w.t.f !!!!!! it is a very ugly car!! the previous generation was better!!!! i think that honda use traditional automatic transmission too!! they do not have tiptronic on their cars!
if i see like this car parked on the road i will kick it off!
come on honda civic is the best expected design for honda, why making this ugly car

  12. Come on All !!!! its US version for North-America.
Hopefully we will have a better Asian version with decent design.

  13. the asian version will not be that different, even for the current civic, the difference between the US and Asian design is few tweeks for the headlights and tail lights, thats it.

  14. Hyundai and Kia are the future. I feel sorry for brain dead idiots who buy these overpriced reliability boxes. No Class. No Soul. And thats the kinds people who buy them!!

  15. Admiting the wrong is a vertue as they say, 3 months ago I bought the new 2011 Avalon and now i regret it, OK it is a good car, comfortable, powerful, and has good resell value, but I should have bought the new Optima, maybe you would say there is no comparison but in fact there is, Almost the same size, the same tech inside (Except Navigation) which frankly I’m not using that much because I know both where I work and where I live !!! the rest is the same, or even better with Optima which has electric folding mirrors and panoramic roof and colled front seats. it looks better and it would have cost me 50k less. anyway, I will have to be stuck with the avalon for the next 5 years.

  16. Hyundai/Kia, Ford, GM – the next leading trio very soon…

  17. It is more powerful, but frankly, most of my driving is highway and almost all new cars have 6 speed trans, so they rev low at highway and give acceptable driving experience

  18. You Are What You Drive !!

This looks like a new City, frankly even the current City looks better than this.

One word for people who still buy these coz its a Blanda, sorry honda. LOSERSSS ;P

  19. Actually I’m a big fan of Honda especially Civic but this time the design is bad, not as I expected before, the previous concept that shown to the public is good.

  20. Really disappointing design. mix of toyota corolla and honda city, superimposed on previous civic design.
i still love the 2006 civic design. even i would buy a new one of the same design today. the design is still much appealing and cool. its only that we have been seeing it for long and got a bit used to. but whatever, the previous design was much better, instead of this, they should have continued the same design.

  21. Absolutely disappointing looks and interier. Will surely have to drift away from honda after driving it for 6 years now.
