Kia Soul and Sorento recalled in U.S.
The U.S. NHTSA safety agency has announced a recall on the 2010 Kia Soul and the 2011 Kia Sorento, apparently to replace interior lighting wiring harnesses.
The faulty lighting units, supplied by a company called JCI, can possibly cause an electrical short resulting in a fire. This U.S. recall affects 35,185 vehicles manufactured between September 7, 2009 and July 30, 2010.
For the Soul, these wiring harnesses are located in the front doors for those cheesy glowing speakers, while for the Sorento, the wires are for the lights in all the doors.
Owners in the U.S. can get a fix for free, but it is unclear whether this recall will be applied to Kia Soul and Kia Sorento models in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries. Both were launched here as 2010 models. Ask your local dealer for the repair.

Kia submitted this recall to the NHTSA. The NHTSA did not pressure Kia or force Kia into the recall. They just stand behind their vehicles. And no, they are not going to issue a recall for one vehicle that had a problem. Once more than one vehicle had a problem, they started investigating components THEMSELVES and found the harness itself to be defective. They also realized that the harness used on the Sorento was nearly identical, and are replacing those also. There have been no reports of Sorento fires, though, just similar parts. The NHTSA never even opened an investigation on the wiring. They are too preoccupied with the stupid steering thing.

Most recalls of defective products are characterized as “voluntary,” a confusing term that can lead consumers to believe that the recall is optional. But voluntary recall is just government-speak for a deal that a manufacturer or retailer of a hazardous product has negotiated with the federal agency in charge of overseeing the safety of that product category.
