Mercedes-Benz CL63 & CL65 AMG 2011 models debut

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class was recently unveiled, sporting a new front end with LED bumper lights and a mildly-changed rear end, with a couple of new engines. Now the AMG version of the 2011 CL has been released, in CL63 and CL65 guises, with two more new engines.

For the CL63 AMG, the previous naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre V8 has unfortunately been retired in favour of a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, good for 536 hp and 799 Nm of torque, which amounts to an increase of 18 hp and 169 Nm in US-spec trim. There is also an optional AMG Performance Package now, increasing the numbers to 563 hp and 899 Nm of torque. The standard gearbox is the AMG Speedshift 7-speed automatic for the rear-wheel-drive setup. The 0-100 kph runs will take 4.6 seconds, or 4.5 seconds with the performance package, with a limited top speed of 248 kph, or 297 kph with the package. Mercedes-Benz claims the added power comes with a 27% reduction in fuel consumption.

The CL65 AMG will have a carryover 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12, now good for 621 hp and 999 Nm of torque, which is 17 hp more than before in US-spec trim. It is likely torque-limited as before, as Mercedes-Benz has nothing beyond an old 5-speed automatic to handle all that kick. It can do the 0-100 kph run in 4.4 seconds, with a limited top speed of 297 kph.

All the usual Mercedes-Benz gadgetry is available on the CL63 and CL65 AMG, most being standard but some still optional. Among the available features are 20-inch wheels, AMG-tuned “active body control” suspension, crosswind stabilisation, torque-vectoring brake system that eliminates understeer, drowsiness detection, night-view assist, active lane assist, adaptive cruise control with pre-safe braking, rear camera, massage seats and blind-spot assist.

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG models will reach UAE, Saudi Arabia and GCC showrooms close to the end of 2010.
