2000 Fiat Punto

The second-generation Punto, codenamed Project 188, was launched in 1999 for the 2000 model year. The styling was all-new while retaining the original Punto's distinctive shape and design, while the chassis and interior were completely overhauled. The new Punto also became the first Fiat in decades to carry the original round Fiat badge, to celebrate Fiat's centenary. The entry-level engine had two forms of the 1.2-litre petrol unit, with either 8 valves or 16 valves, with various manual or CVT transmission choices. A sporty two-door 1.8-litre model with a manual gearbox, called the Punto HGT, was briefly offered before 2003. The Punto had adopted the Dualdrive electric power steering and came with two operation modes, using an electric motor, rather than a hydraulic pump driven by the engine, for reduced fuel consumption.
