Overview
The X5 M debuted in late 2009, with a higher-tuned turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 than the regular X5. The M has a 6-speed auto with proper paddle-shifters. Features include iPod / USB adapter interface, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Lane Departure Warning, Active Steering, running boards, Head-Up Display, 4-zone automatic climate control, side-view cameras, top-view camera, leather-covered dashboard, full keyless entry, and smartphone integration. The M gets 20-inch wheels with performance tyres, Adaptive Drive system, aluminium roof rails, M door sill plates, M driver footrest, M steering wheel and M aerodynamic enhancements. It also gets features such as sports suspension, 'M' driving mode, paddle-shifted quicker-response automatic, launch control and a body kit.

Keep a lookout for electrical problems. Make sure the power steering gear and water pump have been replaced. BMW has identified a number of non-M N63 engine components with high failure rates which may also affect the M's S63 engine, including timing chains that stretch and snap, leaking crankcase ventilation and fuel lines, as well as malfunctioning fuel injectors, mass airflow sensors and vacuum pumps, fixed under warranty. May need oil top-up between services. EfficientDynamics fuel-saving systems cause short battery life, may require battery change on every service interval.
