The Ford Mustang is an icon of American something-or-the-other since its 1964 introduction, popular for its bold style and affordable price. The Mustang started the "pony car" genre, and now it has gone back to its old styling. The Mustang rides on rear-wheel-drive platform, but it still doesn't have independent rear suspension to the detriment of handling compared to other sports cars. The interior looks good, but is full of cheap plastics. But this car is one of the best performance bargains in town. The Mustang GT boasts a powerful 4.6-litre V8, available with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic. The new-for-2005 Mustang was sold only in GT form here. Small build quality issues, such as loose weatherstripping rubber, loose door mirrors, loose cabin trim and loose window seals. Few report electrical problems, possibly from water entering engine compartment due to poor seals. Almost all affected by random petrol-tank defect that randomly makes refuelling a 10-minute chore. Noises in 2005-2006 models from the front end when driving over bumps could be due to defective lower control-arms bushings, replaced when under warranty. For 2007-2008 V8 manual models, problems shifting into 2nd or 3rd could be due to faulty synchronisers.
