Overview
The Golf intends to be a German-designed, German-engineered and German-built alternative to the Asian-nameplate vehicles that dominate the entry level of the automotive marketplace. Unlike many of its competitors, the Golf is a hatchback and therefore offers the advantage of cargo-carrying utility not provided by the typical four-door sedans. Hatchbacks were never popular, but the VW Golf always had some sort of following here. Though the base models, namely the 1.6-litre and the 2.0-litre, are no rockets, they are still responsive and fun to drive. Its four-wheel independent suspension and relatively long wheelbase give it a nice ride along with good stability and handling. The Golf comes standard with available safety features such as front and side-curtain airbags, ABS brakes and optional ESP, alongside available convenience features like power windows and CD stereo.

Known Problems
Over-sensitive auto-headlight and wiper rain sensors are considered normal. Various squeaks and rattles develop within warranty period, most from cabin trim but some from suspension components. Stereo, radiator fans, door seals and steering rack all known to fail. Early models have ignition coil failure, just like previous-generation models, so some owners carry extra ignition coils to avoid getting stranded. FSI engines require 98+ octane sulphur-free petrol, otherwise problems expected. Some report that radio may turn on and drain battery even when parked. Some a/c compressor and condenser failures reported in GTI model. Many having problems with DSG automanual gearbox, due to failure of "Mechatronic Control Module." Turbo oil seals fail in GTI models as soon as warranty is up.
