2008 Daihatsu Materia

Yet another entry into Daihatsu's sub-compact range, this one is a unique little number. Daihatsu advertising is so poor in this region that we only came across this specialty machine by mistake. Some prefer to call it a mini MPV, but it is really a hatchback. The little boxy car offers oodles of space thanks to the tall shape and long wheelbase. It is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine, with a choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The rear doors open wide to allow easy entry and exit, and the rear seat can be optioned to slide front and back. Luggage capacity is hihgly flexible, with folding front seats and split-folding rear seats, while pockets are all over the place. This Toyota-derived vehicle has its annoying gauge cluster in the centre, and the interior treatment is all hard plastic, except for interesting touches such as illuminated speakers and handles.
