The awkwardly-named MP4-12C marks McLaren Automotive's return to building their own street cars, having dabbled in Formula 1 for years now. Their "affordable" supercar is still pricey, but it is positioned as a no-compromises piece of engineering, with a carbon-fibre tub chassis, bespoke 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, a "pre-cog" 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, an adaptive hydraulic suspension system, an air-brake spoiler, various driving modes and even an F1-developed brake-steer system. Using absolutely no parts from other manufacturers, the McLaren can be fully customised, and can generally be had with manual sports seats, leather-alcantara upholstery, touchscreen multimedia system, MP3 stereo with USB port, power windows and mirrors, smart keyless entry, HID headlights, carbon-fibre interior trim, auto a/c, cruise control, cup-holders and all that, though there is no Bluetooth, rear camera or CD player. Known Problems
Windshield cracks reported, with little or no outside impact. Fuel-filler cover pops open while driving or gets stuck when required to open, due to defective locking-mechanism design. When battery dies, side-window is supposed to automatically come down a bit for cabin access, but when that doesn't happen due to design flaw, window shatters when you pull on the door.
