The Audi A5 originally debuted for 2008 in the GCC as a four-seater coupe based on the latest stretched A4 platform, with the range later diluted by the addition of a 5-door model. All A5 versions feature a loudmouth grille framed by rectangular headlights, a very thick C-pillar, frameless windows, and a waistline that flows upwards around the wheel arches. The Audi A5 coupe is powered by either a 2.0-litre turbo 4-cylinder or a 3.2-litre V6 engine. Power is delivered through a CVT transmission for the front-wheel-drive version, and a 6-speed tiptronic auto transmission for the Quattro all-wheel-drive version. For 2009, an underwhelming Audi S5 Quattro coupe model debuted, with a 4.2-litre V8 mated to a 6-speed automatic. The front-wheel-drive A5 Cabrio convertible also eventually joined the line-up with only a detuned 2.0T engine and a CVT, offering less power than the coupe.
