BMW 8-Series 1998 Overview

The BMW 8-Series, also known by its chassis code E31, is a Grand Tourer developed as a flagship for the German carmaker in its time. While it replaced the original E24 6-Series in 1991, the 8-Series was not a successor, but rather an entirely new class with a substantially higher price. Initially, the only engine on offer was a 5.0-litre V12, for the 850i, which was later renamed 850Ci by 1993. The 1993 model-year also saw the introduction of the 4.0-litre V8 with an 840Ci model, which was later replaced by a 4.4-litre V8 for 1995. Also for 1995, a new 5.4-litre V12 replaced the old engine for the 850Ci. All models were offered with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. From 1992 to 1996, an M-tuned 850CSi model was also offered, identified by its frontal chin spoiler, unique wheels and manual-only gearbox, and powered by a 5.6-litre V12. The cars at the time were loaded with features such as leather upholstery, power windows and mirrors, power-adjustable seats, premium stereo, LCD info displays, airbags, ABS and more.
