The Golf intends to be a German-designed, German-engineered and German-built alternative to the Asian-nameplate vehicles that dominate the entry level of the automotive marketplace. Unlike many of its competitors, the Golf is a hatchback and therefore offers the advantage of cargo-carrying utility not provided by the typical four-door sedans. Hatchbacks were never popular, but the VW Golf always had some sort of following here. Though the base models, namely the 1.6-litre and the 2.0-litre, are no rockets, they are still responsive and fun to drive. Its four-wheel independent suspension and relatively long wheelbase give it a nice ride along with good stability and handling. The Golf comes standard with available safety features such as front and side-curtain airbags, ABS brakes and optional ESP, alongside available convenience features like power windows and CD stereo.
