New Electric Vehicles Under AED 200,000 in the UAE

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are considered the future due to their energy efficiency, pollution reduction, fuel cost savings and lower maintenance expenses. However, they face challenges like limited driving ranges, longer charging times and relatively underdeveloped charging infrastructure.

As of 2024, the UAE has made significant progress in expanding its EV charging network. The Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) has installed Green EV Chargers throughout the city and continues adding more. Meanwhile, Etihad Water & Electricity (EtihadWE) is setting up charging stations in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Dibba, Dhaid and Fujairah. ADNOC Distribution and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) also develop and operate EV infrastructure in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE.

You can locate the nearest charging station through the DEWA website and apps such as PlugShare, Shabik, ElectroMaps, and others.

Here’s a list of EVs, mainly dominated by Chinese manufacturers, offering affordable and eco-friendly mobility options. Several electric cars available in the UAE under AED 200,000 are as follows:

FAQs

How long does it usually take to charge an electric car?

Charging an electric car can take 20 minutes to 48 hours, depending on the method. Rapid chargers at public stations can charge an EV up to 80% in 30 minutes to 1 hour, while home chargers typically take 4 to 10 hours. Slower, standard outlets may require 12 to 48 hours for a full charge.

What are the different types of EV Green Chargers found across the UAE?

DEWA launched four types of charging stations:

  • Wall Box Charger: This AC charger has 22 kW power and a single Type 2 Socket. Depending on the EV and battery capacity, it can recharge a full battery in 2 to 4 hours.
  • Public Charger: A 22 kW AC charger with a double Type 2 Socket. It also provides complete battery charging within 2 to 4 hours, depending on the EV and battery capacity.
  • Fast Charger: This is a 50 kW DC with Combo CCS Sockets. Depending on the battery capacity, it can charge up to 80% within 20 to 40 minutes. They are mostly installed at petrol stations.
  • Ultra-Fast Charger: A 150 kW DC charger with a Type 2 Socket, usually used for Tesla EV models.

Is petrol cheaper than charging an electric car?

No, petrol is not cheaper than electric car charging fees. As of September 2024, petrol prices range from AED 2.71 to 2.78 per litre, while charging an EV would cost a minimum of AED 1.20 + VAT per kWh for a ‘fast’ charging service and a minimum of AED 0.70 + VAT per kWh for a ‘slow’ charging.

For reference, the Tesla Model 3 with a 60 kWh battery will cost a minimum of 42 dirhams to fully charge. The fast-charging service will cost about 72 dirhams for a full charge, providing a range of approximately 513 km. This means it costs about 8 fils per km.

Does an electric car perform well in heat or high temperatures?

EV car batteries perform well in temperatures between 25°C and 35°C. According to automobile manufacturers, driving an EV in higher temperatures can reduce its range by 17%. Higher temperatures may also affect battery lifespan and charging rate.

Is it safe to drive an EV while it is raining?

There are no electrocution risks while driving an EV in the rain. However, drivers should avoid excessively flooded roads or areas to prevent potential damage.

Are electric cars a better environmental option?

Electric cars are generally better for the environment than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, as they produce no greenhouse gas emissions and can be powered by renewable energy sources.

  1. BEST FOR NEXT GENERATION CARS

  2. Those range figures are widely off the mark. Deduct at least 20 to 25 % less with a fully charged battery, if the battery is an LFP.
The other batteries are even less.
