Abu Dhabi Police and Sulayem at Khalifa University

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) teamed up with the Abu Dhabi Police, the Traffic & Licensing department and the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) to shed light on the risks of motorcycle and sport utility vehicle (SUV) risks. The event attracted hundreds of students from KUSTAR, as well as Al Fatima College and Institute of Applied Technology.

The initiative, titled ‘Legal licensing of ATV bikes and risks of usage’, was attended by Brigadier Dr. Saeed Saif Al Alawi, Vice Chairman of the Scientific Coordination Committee of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research; Brigadier General Ghaith Al Zaabi; Colonel Khamees Ishaaq Mohammad, Deputy Director of Traffic and Patrol Department; Mr. Mahmoud Mohammed Abdul Qader, Traffic Expert at Abu Dhabi Police and; KUSTAR Interim President Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi. Mohammed Bin Sulayem, UAE champion rally driver and President of the Emirates Cars & Tourism Club, was a guest speaker and addressed certain issues on the risks of motorcycle and SUV use.

Some of the topics discussed included: the importance of tightening control, rules of circulation and the possible formation of a committee to develop a vision for the centralizing rules on the licensing and regulations for bike use.

Dr. Arif said: “Part of the mission of Khalifa University is to serve the society by equipping its students with life skills in addition to academic knowledge. We are aware of the passion our students have for riding quad bikes and driving automobiles. Hosting such sessions reflects our commitment to invest in our youth’s overall safety. For this event, we wanted them to be aware of the dangers of driving and how to be mindful of others on the road.”

The General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police hosted an exhibition on campus grounds with the participation of: the Police Directorate of Traffic and Patrol, Crime Scene management, 999 Magazine, and the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research.

Mohammed Bin Sulayem certainly drew a crowd when he was on hand to present the cars on display. The ‘F 999’, the Police’s new sport vehicle, is one of the fastest sports cars in the world, and their new SAQR motorcycle was specially designed for them and includes unique features which combine the components from UAE heritage and design patterns from a global perspective.

Aidarous Al Hashemi, Communication Engineer student at KUSTAR, commented that the Police demonstrations gave him a stronger incentive to obtain a doctorate degree in a scientific discipline so that he pursues a career with the police in the future.

Female KUSTAR Aerospace Engineer student Meera Al Hammadi said, “I thought police work was limited to just men, but after today’s session, I’ve become convinced that we females have great opportunities to develop our capabilities for future roles at Abu Dhabi Police.”
