2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV joins the EV truck game in two flavours
Electric Pickups are a new breed that is grabbing a lot of headlines recently. This growing lineup consists of the still-in-development Tesla Cybertruck, its newcomer rival Rivian R1T, new GMC Hummer EV, and Ford F-150 Lightning among several others. Chevrolet, on the other hand, had not been actively taking part in this race, until now. Here is the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV.
Silverado is a big name for Chevy. Selling like hotcakes, the IC engine Silverado is a common sight, especially in the United States. Though late to the fight, the Silverado EV is just as important for Chevrolet. Thus, they have gone all-out with their latest EV offering.
The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV comes in two flavours, the entry-level Work Truck (WT) forming the stepping stone. Then comes the flagship RST trim. Both the trims promise a 640 kms worth of estimated range, as well as 350 kW DC fast charging that can pump in enough juice for 160 km in 10 minutes.
What sets the RST apart from the WT is the powertrain. The top dog gets a 664 hp dual-motor setup that drives all four wheels. It is accompanied by 1,063 Nm of torque. This can propel the big EV pickup from 0 to 100 kph in just over 4.7 seconds. The towing capacity of the RST is mighty impressive too at more than 4.5 tons. It can carry 590 kgs in the bed as well.
The Silverado EV Work Truck (WT) on the other makes do with “just” 510 hp and 834 Nm. Understandably the performance drops, with a capacity to tow 3.6 tons. Fret not, Chevy is working on a WT Fleet version that can tow more than 9 tons.
Chevrolet Silverado EV RST brings other perks as well. This includes rear-wheel steering, Super Cruise, automatic adaptive air suspension and a versatile bed with a Multi-Flex tailgate. The latter allows the user to fold the rear seats and carry longer items. Opening the Multi-Flex tailgate and folding the rear seats free up an effective cargo bed of length 10 feet 10 inches.
If some elements in the design of the Chevy Silverado EV remind you of the Avalanche Pickup, you are not alone. Yet, the overall design is sharp and as muscular as you want a truck to be. Both trims are only available in crew cab configuration.
The interior is dominated by screens, as expected from a modern EV. The center screen of the RST is huge, measuring 17-inches. This stretches onto an 11-inch digital instrument cluster. This is accompanied by a 14-inch heads-up display. The Silverado EV WT is also decently equipped, with a pair of screens but no details on their size are available. Both vehicles’ infotainment systems run on a new Linux-based Ultifi platform.
With the engines gone, the front end is opened up for a frunk, or an eTrunk, as GM calls it. They also offer a PowerBase charging system for power tools or anything you fancy. It can also charge other EVs if need be. It has a capacity of 10.2 kW and offers 10 outlets.
The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV is not coming this year though. In its home market, the Silverado EV will make its first appearance in Spring of 2023, in the WT guise. The RST will follow suit after a few months, as a First Edition that will cost $105,000 (AED 385,660). The range opens up at $41,595 (AED 152,778), for the WT variant. Will it make it to our shores? With electrification going on in full swing, and people going crazy for EV trucks, why not?
