2022 Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback small EVs revealed
Audi’s current EV offensive is quite small, consisting of the E-Tron Crossover, E-Tron Sportback and the E-Tron GT sedan. With most of its rivals barging into the EV arena with all guns blazing, Audi is in no mood to rest. This week, they have taken the covers off their smallest EV offerings, Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron.
The Audi Q4 E-Tron twins are compact, at just 4.6 meters long. With this tiny body, they are poised to fight the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach E, and their own cousin, the VW ID.4. There are design cues on the Q4 E-Tron twins that are inspired by its bigger siblings, including the large hexagonal panel (it really is time we unlearn the word “grill”) upfront, and the full-width LED light bar at the rear. The roof of the Q4 E-Tron Sportback slopes down at the rear while the Q4 E-Tron gets a regular roof. There are 19-, 20-, and 21- inch wheels on offer.
The interior of the Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback comes standard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a digital instrument cluster. Customers can also opt for a larger screen, measuring in at 11.6-inches, that adds wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a voice assistant, and advanced MMI Plus software. Speaking of screens, there is an optional augmented reality Heads-up display in the options list, if you fancy that. The interior is also roomy, with the Q4 E-Tron offering a substantial 521 litres of cargo space with all seats up. Surprisingly, the Q4 E-Tron Sportback gets more room inside, with 535 litres, despite the sloping roof.
The portfolio of the Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback is quite a vast one. As a stepping stone to the range, there is a base Q4 35 model with a 52-kWh battery hooked up to a single motor. This rear-mounted motor gives an output of 168 hp and a torque of 310 Nm. The range of the Q4 35 is estimated to be 341 kms, as per the WLTP cycle. The Q4 35 E-Tron Sportback gets a range of 349 kms.
Climbing up to the next rung of the ladder, we get to the Q4 40 E-Tron which gets a larger 77-kWh battery. The motor of the Q4 40 is capable of producing 201 and it claims a WLTP range of 520 kms. Topping off the range is the Q4 50 E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback, with a dual-motor AWD setup and the same 77-kWh battery from the Q4 40. This model is good for 295 hp and 460 Nm, and can rush from 0 to 100 kph in just over 6.4 seconds. The range estimate for the Q4 50 as per WLTP is 488 kms in the crossover and 497 km in the Sportback.
The price of the Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback of our region is not officially published yet. In Germany, the Q4 E-Tron range starts at USD 41,900 (AED 153,898). With this price tag, the Audi Q4 E-Tron and Q4 E-Tron Sportback enter a hotly contested segment currently ruled by the Tesla Model Y.
