2022 BMW i4 joins electric car range, doubles down on huge grille

BMW, though stagnating for a while after launching the i3 and the i8, is looking for a bigger break into the future car market with its “i” line of cars. Joining this family is the new 2022 BMW i4, a production version of their Concept i4. The new electric four-door coupe will join the iX, iX3 crossovers, i3 and i3S hatchbacks in BMW’s electric lineup.

The 2022 BMW i4 looks very much like the next generation of the petrol-engined 4-Series Gran Coupe, which is yet to be revealed. This is not a bad thing though, the Gran Coupe is based on the 4-Series Coupe which is quite a looker if you can live with that grill. BMW has stuck with the large grill, despite heavy criticism, for the new BMW i4 as well. The i4 gets clothed in EV-specific details like blue accents, a redesigned bumper, and aero wheels. The door handles sit flush with the body, improving aerodynamics. The large kidney grill grabs a lot of attention of course, but it definitely will be a deal-breaker for many.

BMW is still keeping the answer to “What is powering the i4?” under wraps for now. From what we know, the 2022 BMW i4 will get a powertrain good enough for 523 hp that can rush from 0 to 100 kph in under 4 seconds. This firepower may be reserved for the top-rung, where the M Performance model sits. As per WLTP estimates, the battery of the 2022 BMW i4 should keep enough juice to run 590 km in a single charge.

It is unknown at this time whether BMW will bring the i4 to the Middle East.
