2021 BMW 4-Series convertible debuts, now with cloth top again

Following the debut of the controversial new BMW 4-Series coupe recently, the 2021 BMW 4-Series convertible has been revealed. While the changes are obvious, the biggest noteworthy point is the replacement of the previous retractable hardtop with a traditional soft top.

The new soft top is claimed to be 40% lighter than the previous hard top, more compact when lowered, allows for a larger trunk, and can be had in black or “Starlight” black (with silver bits woven into the material). It can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 50 kph in 18 seconds, even with a remote.

Variants include the 430i with a 255 hp 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo, and the M440i with a 382 hp 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo. BMW says the 430i convertible can do the 0-100 kph run in about 6 seconds, while the M440i can do it in about 5 seconds. As on the coupe, the car comes with a 48-volt starter/generator hybrid assist system that recuperates braking energy to use it for supplementing the powertrain under acceleration.

The 2021 430i and M440i convertibles both can be had with either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, with only an eight-speed automatic.

The M440i additionally comes with M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, and Variable Sport steering, all of which can be added to the 430i. An Adaptive M Suspension and a Dynamic Handling Package are optional for both models.

Technology features include an 8.8-inch touchscreen standard with a 10.25-inch unit available along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 3D surround-view camera and the usual active safety features are all available.

A slightly bigger car than before, the 2021 4-Series convertible is expected to be a bit more expensive than the outgoing model. For the money, you get a whole host of enhancements, a mild hybrid system and far taller grille. The new model should arrive in UAE and GCC showrooms by early next year.
