Abu Dhabi to get Salik-style road tolls soon

Roads tolls will soon be introduced in Abu Dhabi, according to a law issued by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan this February.

The state’s Department of Transport will determine the roads where the toll will be implemented to reduce traffic, the amount to be paid and the operation times. The department’s recommendations will then be submitted to the Executive Council for approval.

The ways in which the toll will be charged is yet to be determined by the department.

The law says ambulances, the Armed Forces, Civil Defence, public buses and motorcycles will be exempt from paying the tariff. Drivers are expected to subscribe to the upcoming toll system, and those who cross a toll gate without paying the fee can face fines not exceeding Dhs 10,000.

The system should be similar to the Salik toll system introduced in Dubai back in 2007.
