Tesla Roadster returns as the quickest car ever

The Tesla Roadster is back in an all-new suit for 2020. Following the footsteps of the original Tesla Roadster that came in 2006 as a Lotus-derived model, this new one is completely original. The new Tesla Roadster does not just improve on the original model’s performance — it smokes it as well as every other hypercar out there.

The Lotus-chassis based original model had the electric equivalent of 285 hp to play with, which was not a bad amount when it came out in 2006. This gave it a 0-100 kph time of just over 4 seconds; the performance wasn’t bad as well. But the new Roadster halves the time as it takes just over 2 seconds to complete 0-100 kph run. This, as per the claims made, makes it the quickest production car in the world. All of this comes from the 10,000 Nm of torque, and no, it’s not a typo. It will do the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, which is better than any production car. The total highway range of the Roadster is claimed to be close to 1000 km.

Three electric motors power the Roadster, one in the front and two in the back. This effectively gives it all-wheel-drive. The battery is said to be a powerful 200 kWh unit.

The Tesla Roadster will go on sale with a base price of US$ 200,000. There will be a fully-loaded Founders Series model which can be ordered by only 1000 people, at US$ 250,000 apiece.
