Saudi women allowed to drive soon

In what has to be the biggest news to ever come out of the Kingdom, Saudi Arabia has just announced via state media that it will allow women to drive soon.

King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz ordered the reform in a royal decree, requested that “driving licences be issued to women who wanted them.”

A committee will be formed to look into how to implement the new order, which is expected to take effect by July 2018.

It has also been reported that female visitors to Saudi Arabia who have valid GCC licences will also be allowed to drive without requiring a male guardian to be present.

Up till now, women had to be ferried around either by expat family drivers, male relatives or taxis. There is speculation that car sales will also get a boost.
