Sitting between the hatchback-like X1 and the midsize X5, the BMW X3 compact crossover has undergone a complete makeover for the 2018 model year.

The 2018 X3 boasts of a completely new design language, all-new interior, a new chassis, and new engines. A new “3D” grille is flanked by a new set of adaptive LED headlamps. The side profile is familiar, but completely redone. At the rear, a new set of tail lamps and a pair of exhaust tips complete the aesthetic detailing. Buyers can now go for the optional “Luxury Package” which adds a chrome grille, new bumper finishers, and dashboard upholstery. The optional M Sport package comes with 20-inch wheels that replace the standard 19-inchers along with other body-trim additions.

BMW has liberated more room in the interior as the wheelbase of the new X3 is increased by 55mm. The cabin is now more opulent than the one it replaces. A three-zone climate control system, ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, an optional Heads Up Display and a set of remotely operated rear 20:40:20 split folding seats have been added to the amenities list.

The big news under the hood is the upgraded 3.0-litre inline-six engine, as the M performance badge gets slapped onto an X3 for the very first time. The X3 M40i powered by this engine can accelerate from 0-100 kph in less than 5 seconds, thanks to the 355 hp and 500 Nm of torque that the engine outputs. Under the M40i, an xDrive30i X3 replaces the current xDrive28i. This model is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 248 hp and 350 Nm of torque channeled to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It can reach 100 kph from standstill in just over 6 seconds. A diesel option is also available in the xDrive30d guise which gets a 190 hp 2.0-litre engine.

Expect the new models to debut in the UAE, KSA and the rest of the GCC by early next year, with starting prices well above Dhs 200,000.

  1. I suppose the “550cm” should be “5.5cm” or “55mm” in your article above.
