Volkswagen have confirmed they will produce the Golf R400, which will likely be available sometime in 2016.

According to British publication CAR, Volkswagen are considering to increase the output to 420 PS (414 hp) which could prompt a reshuffle of the “R400” nametag.

The original concept, which was shown off at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, had a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing about 400 PS (395 hp) and 450 Nm of torque. VW claimed it could go from 0-100 kph in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 280 kph.

Earlier reports indicated VW were having problems finding a suitable gearbox for the Golf R400 to handle all the torque. One possible solution is to add their new 10-speed DSG gearbox to this model which they introduced late last year, as VW claims it can handle torque figures of up to 550 Nm.
