Huge accident in Al Ain leaves 24 dead and many injured

Al Ain crash
A horrific accident on Al-Ain-Abu Dhabi Truck Road on February 4th left 24 dead and 24 more injured. A truck collided with a bus that was transporting workers.

According to Gulf News, the truck was trying to overtake the bus, but lost control which led to the collision. The truck was carrying a load of sand and crushed stones which fell on the bus, trapping many of the workers. Abu Dhabi rescue units were quick to respond and arrive at the scene. A crane had to be called in to pull the truck off the bus.

Most of the workers were of South Asian origin. Among the victims, 16 of them were Bangladeshi, with the others from Pakistan, Egypt and India.

The bus driver will soon be discharged after suffering minor injuries. However, the truck driver has been arrested by police, pending further investigations.

Safety standards in buses continue to be lax in some segments, despite efforts by the government to improve the situation. In Dubai for example, school-buses are nowadays speed-limited to 80 kph and come with seat-belts, while new van-type microbuses now have all fixed seats with seat-belts while getting rid of jump-seats. However, such measures aren’t a guarantee against protection in these kinds of accidents.

  1. Teach people road discipline and proper driving skills and accidents will fall short..

Many people here, including myself at times, do anything but abide to the most basic traffic and street laws…

Also, the stress that people have to endure at work is terribly blown off on the streets and that is dangerous for everybody..

  2. Today I saw a sedan and pickup accident sedan overturned and pickup door and front were inside dono what’s happening it seems we are back to accident times I think all because of stress and tension

  3. Especially taxi drivers who spend long hours stuck in traffic.

Also. dunno how half of these ppl get driver’s license. Seems like they grab it off shelves in grocery stores.

    • True. All Dubai and other Emirates have done is simply hiked up prices of the licenses without implementing any stricter standards. The difference between getting a license 10yrs ago and now is that instead of waiting for 2wks and paying 500AED (like I did), you wait 6mths and pay 3000AED, yet any Tom, Dick and Abood can still get it without actually knowing how to drive. To reduce road accidents you need to start with stricter license laws not by hiking up the actual cost and wait time.

  4. i second to Roj with regards to the stressful life blown on the street. Today’s morning SZR accident gave a weird/funny episode where one of the drivers was barely held by at least 3 officers as he was trying to attack the other driver. He was pushing and fighting even the police officers which showed that the guy really snapped. it was 8 AM… so early to blow …

  5. Allah bless their soul

  6. Many people think as if they own the road & would like to drive in any way in any lane irrespective of the traffic conditions, regardless of other drivers.
May all drivers drive in a sensible & responsible way.
