15,000 flood-damaged cars from Hurricane Sandy on airport runway

After Hurricane Sandy swept through parts of the United States in October 2012, it left a trail of devastation behind. Of course, caught in the ravage were thousands of cars. Some of these cars, about 15,000 of them, have been gathered up on the empty runways of Calvetron Executive Airport in New York State.

Insurers have gathered up these cars, hoping to recover some of the billions of dollars in losses caused after Sandy. The 15,000 cars recovered is still a small number compared to the estimated 230,000 cars that were reportedly destroyed after the natural disaster. The least-damaged cars will be auctioned off, while some will be parted out, and the rest will be scrapped.

In New York, it is state law to sell these cars with a ‘flood damaged’ warning on them. Some of these will probably make its way into the UAE used car market, and we are pretty sure they won’t come with any warnings. Photographer Doug Kuntz, who took these aerial pictures, spoke with Autoblog and referred to these possibly-unsafe cars as “ticking time bombs” since problems with electrics and computers usually take a while, sometimes years, to show up. People who plan to buy American-imported cars from used-car markets in the UAE and other GCC countires should get the VIN number of the vehicle and check its history on carfax.com.

  1. Some of the imported cars that are sent for interior and exterior wash here locally usually have sticker markings or chalk writings that state the car was damaged in flood, collisions or any other incident before the job is carried out. It even mentions the insurance company’s name.

  2. These “Flood damaged” cars could “Flood” the UAE used car market. Beware !!

  3. New rule just implemented: Government will not allow used cars from unauthorized dealers for registration. SAAAAAAAAD

    • What’s an unauthorised dealer? Those individuals who used to casually import one or two cars to sell here?

  4. One should check the car-fax of any US import car.
The car fax cost around 10$ on the internet and it has all the previous history of the car and will show if the car was hit or slavaged.
