Mercedes-Benz G-Class 2013 released with G500, G 63 and G 65 AMG

Mercedes-Benz has released details on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and the changes remain expectedly limited. The models on offer in the GCC include the G 500 and the new G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models.

The G-Wagen’s external modifications include LED daytime running lamps similar to what aftermarket firms like Brabus was already offering, along with new exterior mirrors. The AMG versions also feature a characteristic new AMG radiator grille with double louvres, and distinctive new bumpers with large air intakes, along with red brake calipers and 20-inch wheels (photos not yet available).

Sure to be popular in the UAE, the G 500 uses a carryover 388 hp 5.5-litre V8 with 530 Nm of torque with a 7-speed automatic. The new misleadingly-named G 63 AMG comes with a 544 hp 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 760 Nm of torque. The new G 65 AMG gets a 612 hp 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with a ridiculous 1000 Nm of torque. A G 350 Bluetec diesel model is offered in Europe only.

The instrument panel and centre console have been completely redesigned to include new controls. There is now a TFT colour display in the instrument cluster between the two round dials behind the new steering wheel. A further large colour screen is part of the COMAND Online system and incorporates a DVD changer and the COMAND Controller, which are standard on all G-Class models. This new infotainment generation offers, amongst other features, a navigation system with special additional off-road functions, the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

Certain design elements of the previous model’s interior have been retained, including the grab handle on the front-passenger side, the switches for the three differential locks, and the redesigned shift lever in the lower section of the centre console.

New optional extras include safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitor and parking sensors with reversing camera.

Further individualisation options from the exclusive “designo” range are available at extra cost.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class range will come to the Middle East by September this year.
