Long-term update: 2012 Volkswagen Passat CC V6

Our freebie Volkswagen Passat CC has now completed its break-in period, so we’re finally getting to open up the throttle and listen to that 3.6-litre V6. The same engine powers the new VW Touareg as well as the pricey Porsche Cayenne V6, and we loved the motor in those SUVs.

Of course, it will take up to 10,000 km more before the engines gets up to its peak performance. So far, the car feels perky but not as fast as a 300 hp all-wheel-drive car should feel. According to the specs, it is supposed to do 0-100 kph in 5.6 seconds, easily in sports-car territory. We’ll see.

One thing is for sure though — it is very economical. Our trip computer is showing 11.0 litres/100 km, matching the fuel consumption of some 4-cylinder compact cars we’ve driven. We’ll even do a manually-calculated fuel economy test to confirm the readings, but it’s safe to say we won’t be spending much on fuel, although we’re already spending money on hand car-washes to preserve the pretty paint!
